The FDA is warning shoppers to stay away from Nexium for over two years, and is warning consumers not to use Nexium as an over-the-counter medicine because it contains a carcinogen that can lead to permanent health problems.
Nexium, the generic version of AstraZeneca's over-the-counter heartburn and acid reflux drug Nexium (esomeprazole), is used to treat frequent heartburn and acid reflux symptoms like heartburn that occur twice a year, according to the Food and Drug Administration. The risk of permanent health problems has been associated with the use of over-the-counter (OTC) drugs such as prescription and over-the-counter medicines that are no longer in short supply.
Nexium is the only over-the-counter medicine approved to treat frequent heartburn, a condition in which up to 14 patients per day are more than twice a week in the past year. The FDA warned people to avoid taking Nexium and other over-the-counter drugs unless directed by a doctor to do so by July 31, 2018, the last day the drug was allowed to be used by consumers.
The warning also applies to the sale of Nexium for OTC use. OTC drugs have been the primary cause of acid reflux disease, heartburn, and ulcers that are triggered by stomach acid.
The FDA also warned people to avoid taking the drug because of the risk of permanent heartburn. The warning was based on studies that have reported that over 60 percent of people who took Nexium for a long time were not adequately warned.
The FDA also warned consumers not to use Nexium if they are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, breastfeeding or using a prescription medicine for heartburn for two years after they have used the drug.
Nexium has been linked to death and injury from heart attack and stroke, which can be fatal. According to the FDA, people who take the medication should be monitored closely and should consult a doctor if they experience symptoms such as a burning feeling in the chest or throat, severe dizziness, or chest pain during the second or third doses of the medication.
The FDA warned people to avoid taking Nexium because the risk of permanent health problems is higher when they are over 35 years old. In fact, about 40 percent of people aged 35 and over who take the drug take at least one prescription medicine during the first year of use. The risk of permanent health problems increases with age.
The warning applies to all OTC heartburn remedies sold on the internet. All OTC drugs have been linked to cancer and heart disease, and many of the OTC drugs were used to treat heartburn that occurred between January 1, 2007, and September 30, 2016.
The FDA has not received any reports of people taking Nexium for more than a year. If you take Nexium and other OTC heartburn remedies sold on the Internet, your health care provider or pharmacist can help you determine whether you have a health problem.
